Tuna Champions is all about helping us fishers looking after and respecting our Southern Bluefin Tuna fishery so we can enjoy them forevermore. The team, lead by Dr Sean Tracey, does this by sourcing the world’s best practices based on scientific research, and distributing that information to us recreational fishers using their website, email mailing lists, social media, and printed materials. The information they have gathered includes:
- How to catch and handle tuna to maximise their chances of survival, or eating qualities;
- How to release tuna to maximise their chances of survival; and
- How to humanely dispatch, process and store the tuna you choose to keep to maximise their food quality.
This project is funded by the Australian government through the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, and is an initiative of the Australian Recreational Fishing Foundation conducted in collaboration with the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania.
